Trip to Juliaca up near Lake Titicaca

On July 11-12, Kevin and Sandy joined some people from our church in Arequipa to celebrate the installation of the new ministry team in Juliaca. Ten of us packed into a van for the 5 hour drive from Arequipa traversing a pass over 14,800 feet in altitude, a new high point for us. The altiplano or "high plain" is mostly dry and quite chilly.

This is the backside of the Chachani volcano.

In a desert area, seeing water is a welcome sight.
This lake is well over 13,500 feet high.

This is one of the world's highest flocks of flamingos.

Alpaca herds were a common sight.
They are raised both for wool and for meat.
We also saw a few vicunas, not commonly seen.

Padre Alejandro from Cabanaconde and Padre Juan Carlos

from Arequipa came to add their support for the Juliaca church.

Padre Reuben from Lima was installed as the new priest
and Luis Vizcarra was installed as the new lay minister.
Luis just graduated from the seminary in Arequipa and
will hopefully be ordained as a deacon within the year.
We have come to know and respect Luis as a godly young man
and know that the Lord will use him in a mighty way.

On the left, our good friend Naty joined us from Arequipa.
Her son, Luis, is the new lay minister.
Naty has the heart of an evangelist and
can share the gospel with Quechua speakers.
