Kevin joins us for 2 months

On June 2, our son Kevin arrived to spend 10 weeks with us in Arequipa. He is on a summer break before starting his final year of seminary in Chicago at Trinity Evangelical Divinity School. While here, he can satisfy a cross-cultural requirement for his seminary training. He will be helping with the local seminarians who need practice with their English and may also help at either San Lucas school or at the teen orphanage with English. We are very glad to have him share life with us and to get to know our setting here in Arequipa. Kevin is currently immersed in a concentrated 2-week course in Spanish, attending afternoon classes at the same language institute with Gloria.

Kevin's plane arriving from Lima. Our local airport has a
beautiful setting with the Chachani volcano as a backdrop.

It has been fun showing him the local sights.
Before starting his language study,
while Gloria was in class, Sandy took him to
see the Mirador de Yanahuara with its
impressive view of another volcano, El Misti.
On his first Saturday here, we went to the
Church of La Recoleta, established by the
Franciscans in the late 16th century. It has a fine
museum and historical library. On this wall,
you can see the well-known prayer of St. Francis.
Kevin is looking at some of the
book collections which date back several centuries.

Sandy and Kevin on the second level of La Recoleta.

Even though he didn't play for the Sunday service,
he had the opportunity to play along at the Saturday
afternoon practice of the worship team at
Cristo Redentor and learn some new music.
After church yesterday, we took him to the beautiful
viewpoint at Carmen Alto with Chachani in the background.
There is a lot of active farming on the terraces
near the Chili River, Arequipa's water source.
